Different Types of Sleep Disorders
A sleep disorder is also known as Somnipathy. It is a medical disorder of the sleep patterns of a person. Some sleep disorders are genuine that interfere with normal mental, physical, social and emotional functioning. When a person suffers from falling asleep due to no obvious reasons, it is named as Insomnia.
There are different types of sleep disorders. Some of them are as follows:
First of all, Insomnia is a sleep disorder which is defined by difficulty falling or staying asleep. It can be caused by anxiety, stress, jet lag, hormones or digestive problems. It can be very problematic for our overall health and quality of life.
Weight gain, Depression, Irritability, Difficulty concentrating, Impaired work or school performance.
Classification of Insomnia Insomnia is classified as one of the three types :
Intermittent: When insomnia occurs periodically.
Chronic: When insomnia happens on a regular basis for at least one month.
Transient: When insomnia lasts for just a few nights at a time.
It’s a common and treatable sleep disorder in which our breathing temporarily stops during sleep. This leads to the blockage to the lungs. These pauses in breathing interrupt our sleep, leading to many awakenings each hour. Most people don’t remember these awakenings. Thus, it is defined by pauses in breathing during sleep.
It is a serious medical condition that provides less oxygen to the body. It can also cause us to wake up during the night. The lack of oxygen in the body can, therefore, lead to Stroke, high blood pressure, heart diseases, depression and diabetes.
Symptoms of Sleep Apnea include :
Loud, chronic snoring
Gasping, choking during sleep
Frequent pauses in breathing during sleep
Walking up with shortness of breath, headaches, chest pains or a dry throat
These are a class of sleep disorders that cause abnormal behaviours and movements during sleep. These include sleep talking, sleep walking, nightmares, bed wetting and teeth grinding.
Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)
RLS is a sleep disorder which causes an irresistible urge to move our legs or arms. It is related to certain health conditions including Parkinson’s and ADHD disease. This occurs when we are lying down and due to uncomfortable, aching, tingly and creeping sensations.
Signs and Symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) include:
Repetitive cramping of the legs during sleep.
The leg sensations are triggered by rest at getting worse at night.
The uncomfortable sensations temporarily get better when we stretch, move, or massage our legs.
